Castle town or palace gardens?
Windsor pairs castle interiors with a town visit. Hampton Court pairs palace history with a broad outdoor estate. If your ideal day includes a long garden walk, Hampton Court is the more natural starting point. If it centres on castle architecture and royal State Apartments, start with Windsor.
Compare the full journey from your hotel
Do not choose solely from a map of London. Compare the door-to-door route from where you are staying, including station changes and the walk at the other end. A bundled transfer may simplify the day but also fixes your return time.
Plan for weather and access
Neither attraction is entirely indoors. Keep outdoor time flexible, check accessible routes with the operator, and account for security and walking within the site. A rainy forecast does not automatically make every palace interior an equally good substitute.
Our recommendation for a first visit
Choose the history you want to spend time with, then protect the day from overplanning. Avoid squeezing either attraction between two timed central London bookings. If you want both, use separate days so travel does not become the main experience.

Our recommendations compare the experience and practical fit. Check current operator information and the selected ticket or tour before booking.
